Motherboard ports explained: every connector and colour (2026)

Motherboard ports explained properly — that’s the goal of this guide. Whether you’re plugging in your first build or trying to work out why your USB stick is slow, the back panel of a motherboard is a wall of colour-coded sockets that nobody ever actually explains. Here’s every connectivity port you’ll find on a modern motherboard, what each one does, and what all those colours mean.

Quick answer

The colours are a code. On USB ports: black or white = USB 2.0, blue = 5Gbps, teal = 10Gbps, red or yellow = fast or always-on charging. On audio jacks: green = speakers/headphones, pink = microphone. And the golden rule of any build — if you have a graphics card, your monitor plugs into the graphics card, never the motherboard’s own HDMI or DisplayPort.

The rear I/O panel — every port explained

The rear I/O is the strip of ports at the back of your PC. Layouts vary between boards, but the same core connectors appear on almost every modern motherboard.

USB-A ports

The classic rectangular USB port, and the one place where colour genuinely tells you the speed:

Black or white — USB 2.0 (480Mbps). Fine for keyboards, mice, headsets and printers. Slow for storage.
Blue — USB 3.0 / 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps). The standard for USB sticks and external drives.
Teal / turquoise — USB 3.1 / 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps). For fast external SSDs.
Red — usually 10Gbps or a high-current charging port, depending on the board.
Yellow — always-on power. Charges your phone even when the PC is shut down.
Worth knowing: colour coding is a convention, not a law — some brands paint everything black on premium boards. When in doubt, check the tiny labels (e.g. “10G”) printed above the ports or your manual.

USB-C port

The small oval connector. The shape tells you nothing about speed — a USB-C port can be anything from 5Gbps up to 20Gbps, or 40Gbps if the board has USB4 or Thunderbolt (look for a lightning bolt symbol). Great for modern external SSDs, capture cards and fast phone transfers.

HDMI and DisplayPort

These are display outputs — but they only work if your CPU has integrated graphics. They exist for office PCs, troubleshooting, and iGPU-only builds.

The #1 new builder mistake: plugging the monitor into the motherboard while a graphics card sits in the PC. You’ll get either a black screen or terrible performance. If you have a GPU, the cable goes into the GPU’s ports lower down the case.

Ethernet (RJ45)

Typical · 1GbE or 2.5GbE High-end · 5–10GbE

The wide network port for a wired internet connection — still the best choice for gaming, with lower and more stable latency than Wi-Fi. Most current boards ship with 2.5GbE. The two small LEDs on the port show link (steady) and activity (flashing); on many boards the LED colour indicates negotiated speed.

Wi-Fi antenna connectors

Two small gold screw terminals (or push-fit connectors on newer boards) for the antenna that comes in the motherboard box. Without the antenna attached, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range will be dreadful — always fit it, and keep it away from the metal case if you can.

Audio jacks

The cluster of coloured 3.5mm jacks. On a basic board you’ll get three; boards with full surround support have five or six plus an optical output:

Green — line out. Your speakers or headphones go here.
Pink — microphone in.
Blue — line in, for external audio sources like a mixer or console.
Orange — centre speaker and subwoofer (5.1 setups).
Black — rear surround speakers.
Grey — side surround speakers (7.1 setups).

PS/2 port

Status · legacy, still around

The round port that refuses to die. Traditionally purple for keyboards and green for mice; modern boards use a single half-purple, half-green combo port that accepts either. It survives because PS/2 keyboards offer true full n-key rollover and work in any BIOS — which is also why some competitive players still swear by it.

BIOS Flashback and Clear CMOS buttons

Found on · mid-range and up

Not connectivity, but they live on the same panel. BIOS Flashback lets you update the BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU installed — a lifesaver when a new CPU needs a BIOS update the board doesn’t have yet. Clear CMOS resets BIOS settings when an overclock goes wrong. The Flashback button uses one specific USB port, usually outlined or labelled — check the manual.

Inside the case — the internal headers

The rear panel is only half the story. The board itself is covered in headers your case and components plug into:

Motherboard internal headers — 24-pin ATX, SATA ports, M.2 slot and front panel connectors

Power connectors

24-pin ATX — the big one on the right edge that powers the board itself. 8-pin EPS (sometimes 8+4 or dual 8-pin) — top-left corner, powers the CPU. Both must be connected or the PC won’t post; the CPU cable is the one people forget because it hides behind the cooler.

Storage — M.2 slots and SATA ports

M.2 slots take NVMe SSDs that lie flat on the board — the fastest storage you can buy, with no cables at all. SATA ports (the small L-shaped connectors, usually 4–6 of them) handle 2.5″ SSDs, hard drives and optical drives at up to 6Gbps.

Worth knowing: on many boards, filling certain M.2 slots disables specific SATA ports or drops a PCIe slot’s lanes — they share bandwidth. If a drive “disappears”, check the M.2 section of your manual before assuming it’s dead.

Front panel USB headers

Your case’s front ports don’t work by magic — each plugs into a matching header: the 9-pin USB 2.0 header, the chunky 19-pin USB 3.0 header (with the stiff blue cable everyone struggles to route), and the slim USB-C key-A header on newer boards. If your case has front USB-C but the board lacks the header, that port will simply do nothing.

Front panel header (power, reset, LEDs)

The cluster of tiny 1- and 2-pin connectors — power switch, reset switch, power LED and HDD LED — and the fiddliest job in any build. Switches work either way round; LEDs are polarity-sensitive (+/-). The pinout is printed next to the header and in the manual.

Fan and pump headers

4-pin headers scattered around the board: CPU_FAN (your CPU cooler — the PC may refuse to boot without something here), SYS_FAN / CHA_FAN for case fans, and AIO_PUMP / W_PUMP which runs at full power for liquid cooler pumps. 3-pin fans fit 4-pin headers fine — you just lose PWM speed control.

RGB headers — the one you can get badly wrong

Two standards that look similar and are absolutely not interchangeable. 4-pin 12V RGB lights a whole strip one colour; 3-pin 5V ARGB (one pin gap in the connector) controls every LED individually for rainbow effects.

Do not mix them: plugging a 5V ARGB strip into a 12V RGB header will kill the LEDs instantly, sometimes with smoke. Check the label on both the header and the connector before pushing anything in.

HD Audio header

A 9-pin header, usually bottom-left, that connects your case’s front headphone and mic jacks. It’s keyed differently from the USB 2.0 header so you can’t mix them up — but it’s often labelled HD_AUDIO or JAUD1 in the darkest corner of the board, so find it before the GPU goes in.

The three mistakes we fix most often

Monitor in the motherboard, GPU installed: black screen or 20fps in everything. Move the cable to the graphics card.

5V ARGB strip in a 12V header: dead LEDs, occasionally dramatic. Read the label twice, plug once.

External SSD in a black USB port: your 1,000MB/s drive crawling at 40MB/s. Move it to a blue, teal or USB-C port.
