What should I upgrade first on my PC?
It depends on what’s actually limiting you. Still on a hard drive? An SSD is the biggest day-to-day improvement money can buy. On 8GB of RAM? Fix that before anything else. After those it’s CPU vs GPU — which depends on your games and resolution, so the advisor simulates both using the same benchmark-calibrated engine as our FPS calculator and bottleneck calculator.
Do I need a new motherboard to upgrade my CPU?
Only if you change socket. AM4 boards top out at the Ryzen 7 5700X3D — a superb drop-in upgrade. AM5 and Intel LGA1700 have in-socket headroom too. Older Intel sockets (LGA1151/1200) are dead ends, so a CPU upgrade there means a motherboard and possibly new RAM — the advisor prices all of that in automatically.
Is now a bad time to upgrade RAM?
Prices are elevated due to the 2026 memory shortage, so discretionary upgrades (16GB → 32GB) are worth delaying. But if you’re on 8GB, upgrade anyway — it’s below the floor for modern games and nothing else will fix the stutter it causes.
